The individuals that we support have the same rights as any other citizen and should have access to the same opportunities as anyone else. Our job is simple, essentially, to ensure that people have that access and where they experience impairments and challenges to help and support them to these. Those that we support must be involved in setting their objectives and involved in the planning on how our support will help them reach those objectives.
That individuals have the right to be treated with dignity and respect. This means being given opportunities to make real and meaningful decisions about their lives, how and where they are lived.
People have the right to have contact with their families and this should be facilitated by visits in person to their families or to invite them to their home. Families will be the only long term stable features of peoples lives and it is important that these relationships are fostered and enabled to be a continuing positive support for the individual.
